What’s the Difference Between Cologne and Perfume?

Picture this: you enter a perfumery store, the lights above casting a romantic hue over the collection of bottled fragrances. Shimmers of colour catch your eye – golds, silvers, blues, pinks. Each bottle has a story – from the creators of the scent to the final drop.

The world of fragrance is a beautiful one – but we would be lying if we said it was simple!

So, let’s unravel one of its mysteries – what is the difference between a cologne, and a perfume?

What is the Difference Between Cologne and Perfume?

What is Perfume?

Perfume (or Eau de Parfum) typically contains 15-20% essential oils, which is a much higher level than cologne. This added concentration creates a richer, more powerful scent.  And with this level of concentration, it means that less perfume is needed to achieve a strong projection and long-lasting performance.

With most perfumes, we can expect it to last longer on the skin too – usually 8 hours (or more.) Because of its long-lasting properties, perfume is a great choice for long events or occasions, where it’s important to have a fragrance that lasts.

What is the Difference Between Perfume and Eau de Toilette?

Perfumes and Eau De Toilettes contain different concentrations of essential oils, with perfumes boasting a higher concentration. For more on Eau de Toilettes, keep reading.

What is Cologne?

Cologne (or Eau de Cologne) typically contains a lower concentration of essential oils in comparison to perfume. You can expect 2-5% essential oils. Despite the lower concentration of essential oils, cologne offers a lighter, refreshing alternative to the powerful fragrance of perfume. A typical cologne will last between 2-4 hours. To break it down further, here are the different types of cologne:

Eau de Cologne

This type of cologne is the most diluted form, with typical concentration levels of 2-5%. This type of fragrance is best suited for everyday or casual wear. It’s inoffensive, lighter and more refreshing. This type of cologne is suited to a walk in the park, a quick coffee-catch up or a day at the office.

Eau de Toilette

This is the true middle-ground of the fragrance world, balancing itself between the bold notes of perfume and the lighter notes of cologne. With Eau de Toilettes, we can expect to see concentration levels varying between 5-15%. It’s a slightly stronger and longer-lasting alternative to Eau de Cologne. If you’re looking for something more noticeable without steering into high levels of intensity, Eau de Toilette is a fantastic choice.

Perfume vs Cologne – Who Wins?

Before we get into this, it’s important to note that perfumes and colognes have their unique, wonderful attributes – they excel in their own areas.

However, if we’re going to pit the two against each other, we must consider personal preferences and the occasion in which the fragrance will be worn. If you’re looking for a delicate, refreshing and subtle scent, cologne wins. Cologne is perfect for day-to-day activities and more informal settings.

However, if you’re in the market for a bolder, stronger scent that stands the test of time, perfume is going to win. Perfume creates a more memorable impression, with its intensity and endurance making it suitable for formal occasions or special events.

If you’re feeling particularly creative, you could try layering a cologne and a perfume together! Layering can create a truly unique, individual scent profile. As the cologne fades, the perfume will flourish into its middle and base notes. However, with layering it’s important to be mindful of scent-clashing, which will detract from the overall scent and create an unpleasant or overwhelming scent.

Other Fragrance Categories

The fragrance world is made up of much more than colognes and perfumes:

Body Mists

These are water-based scents with a much lower essential oil content than perfumes or colognes. Body mists are lighter, subtler and affordable. Body mists can usually be used on the body and hair – and they’re best applied after a shower or both to help the scent permeate through the skin and last longer.

They’re also a fantastic choice for layering and can be used with a matching body wash or lotion. However, due to the lightness of body mists, the scent will fade more quickly, meaning more applications are needed to top up the scent. Body mists typically last between 2-4 hours.

Some body mists also contain ingredients like aloe, or vitamin B5, which nourish, calm and moisturise the skin as well as providing a subtle fragrance.

Body mists usually have a lighter, fruity scent profile. They’re the perfect candidate for the warmer seasons, which call for softer, airy fragrances to avoid becoming cloying or overwhelming to the nose. They’re a fantastic choice for summer holidays, picnic days and strolls through the park. However, because of their milder projection, they may not be suitable for the colder months. To get the most out of a body mist, focus on the pulse points – wrists, neck and inner elbows.

Perfume Oils

These are concentrated, alcohol-free, oil-based fragrances that can vary from 1-20%. For those who aren’t compatible with alcohol-based fragrances, perfume oils are an excellent choice. And, due to their higher concentration levels, they often last longer than traditional perfumes! However, with perfume oils it’s important not to expose them to heat or sunlight, as they can evaporate quickly in poor conditions.

Perfume oils come in small containers, with a roller ball at the top that is used to apply fragrance directly to the skin without having to use an atomizer. With perfume oils, a little goes a long way, offering a powerful, long-lasting scent. And because they don’t contain alcohol, they’re less likely to cause irritation and drying to the skin.

Perfume oils blend with the oils in your skin, creating a more unique and personal scent. For the best results, they’re best applied to the pulse points, such as the wrists, neck and behind the ears.
